Join Barrels and our Super Tuscan rep, Casey, for a sampling of Super Tuscans.
Super Tuscan wines are typically full-bodied, rich, and spicy red wines from Tuscany, Italy. They can have notes of cherry, plum, tobacco, oak, cedar, or various spices. Super Tuscans are often a blend of Sangiovese mixed with a French grape such as Cabernet Sauvignon or Merlot. They are sometimes aged in oak barrels, which is not the case in traditional Tuscan wines.
Super Tuscans are different from traditional Tuscan wines because they don’t follow the guidelines that delineate the grape varieties allowed in a particular region. In 1995, the Italian labeling term Indicazione Geografica Tipica (IGT) was created to differentiate Super Tuscans from lower-quality wines. IGT rules allow winemakers to use different grapes and winemaking techniques from those required by the DOCG and DOC designations.
The first Super Tuscan red wines began to appear in the 1970s, including the two most famous names, Tignanello and Sassicaia.
