Josh
Tech geek turned wine geek…
A Pacific Northwest resident since 2002 (with roots in Southern Idaho and studies at the University of Idaho and Colorado State), Josh brings a worldly perspective informed by travels throughout New Zealand, Germany, and the Mediterranean. He favors the rich character of Mourvèdre (with Cabernet Sauvignon a close second) and curates a diverse wine list featuring both New and Old World selections, with an emphasis on Washington wines, small-production vineyards, and distinguished wines from women and minority-led wineries. All of my work is inspired by this planet; the positive impact of the natural world and the optimism that it will be tenacious, and that we will be as well. Every painting I create is meant to provide peace and hope. I strive for a small escape in each one.
A bit about Encaustics
I paint with encaustics. I limit myself to the primary colors (red, blue, yellow) and black & white. I just really enjoy mixing colors from the basics 🙂 Encaustic painting is an old technique that involves color pigments melted into bees wax and damar resin (sap). I choose to use encaustics exclusively, not mixing with photographs or oil paints/sticks – though I will sometimes embed rocks or glass. My palette is heated. There are many layers that must be fused together with heat as I paint. The finished painting will have rich texture and depth. The light plays off of this texture, and can make the colors appear differently from different angles. It is a durable material, and is stable to 170degrees F.
