New Hours: Tues. - Fri. 3:00 PM - 9:00 PM Sat. 2:00 PM - 7:00 PM
Tina grew up on Mercer Island, graduated from Mercer Island High School, and then from WSU in 1982. She met Joe, another Coug, in their senior year. Two years later in 1983, they tied the knot. They explored the wineries of Washington, Oregon, and California during the mid 1980s when there were fewer than fifty wineries in Washington, less in Oregon, and California was well ahead of both. They worked part-time at seven Washington wineries from 1985 - 1993. In 1988, they decided they would open a wine bar. In 2018, they did it. Thirty seven years of exploring wines from all over the world has led to the opening of "barrels...experience wine!" Come on in and pop a cork!
Monday eight health officers said masking up remains one of the most effective ways to protect yourself, your family, and your community:
"We recommend all residents wear facial coverings when in indoor public settings where the vaccination status of those around you is unknown. This step will help reduce the risk of COVID-19 to the public, including customers and workers, help stem the increase in COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations in many parts of the state and decrease the spread of the highly contagious Delta variant."
While this is not yet a directive from Governor Inslee or from King County Executive Constantine, it is a recommendation from health officials.
We will be following the recommendation from the top health officials, and we will be masking up again. If you are going to be inside Barrels, we will require that you wear your masks as well. The only way to get out of wearing your mask inside is to come in with official proof of vaccination. Here is what we will accept as official proof.
1. Your vaccination card from the place you were vaccinated. It should have an official CDC logo on it.
2. A certificate from your health care provider that shows vaccination dates. The one from Kaiser says: COVID-19 Vaccination Certificate for Work, School and Travel. Your health care provider can provide you with a similar certificate
If you are not vaccinated, we strongly encourage you to do so. We will also not allow you to take off your mask inside the bar.
While to some this may sound Draconian, we feel it is our responsibility to keep our staff, our customers, and ourselves as safe as we possibly can. We would love to trust that all people telling us they are vaccinated are, but unfortunately, that trust has already been broken.
Further, while Mercer Island is not a “hot spot,” and according to records nearly 90% of our population over 16 has been vaccinated, Barrels still has close to 50% of its customer base from off island. All of us at Barrels have been vaccinated and have copies of our vaccination with us.
We appreciate your understanding of our new requirements and for your continued support.
Joe & Tina
Our Artist for the months of May, June, and July is Mercer Island artist Angie Chatalas.
"I paint in the Abstract Expressionist Style because it closely mimics my mental dance between searching, sensing, and knowing. My experimentation using layers of bold saturated colors and organic shapes keeps me in a constant state of evolution as an artist. Ultimately, I find beauty and inspiration in all of the creations of the universe and strive to play off of them rather than simply recreate them."
When we had to close to the public, we chose to offer virtual wine tastings from Barrels with the help of our friend Craig Katz. We have hosted Kyle MacLachlan (pictured above), Jules Taylor, Damon Huard, and Ken Wright just to name a few. We will continue these from time to time and let you know through Facebook and Instagram when they will happen.
To book a spot for one of the tastings call Barrels at
